Watch Out for Text Toll Scams: What You Need to Know
A new scam is making the rounds — and it’s showing up right on your phone.
Scammers are sending fake toll payment texts, hoping to trick people into clicking a link and handing over sensitive information. At Front Royal FCU, your safety is our priority, and we’re here to help you stay one step ahead.
What Does the Scam Look Like?
The text message usually says something like:
“You have an unpaid toll. Pay now to avoid late fees. [Click here]”
It may appear to come from a toll agency or transportation authority — but it’s 100% fake. These scammers are banking on a quick reaction before you have time to think it through.
Red Flags to Watch For:
- The message comes from an unfamiliar number
- It includes a suspicious link (often shortened)
- You haven’t recently driven on a toll road
- It urges immediate payment to avoid penalties
Even if you do use toll roads, never click a link in a message like this.
What If You Clicked the Link?
If you accidentally engaged with the scam — don’t panic. Take these steps right away:
- Do not enter any personal info if the site is still open. Close it immediately.
- Run a virus scan if you clicked from a smartphone or computer.
- Monitor your accounts closely for any suspicious activity.
- Change your online banking password, just to be safe.
- Report the scam to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
And of course — if you ever notice something suspicious with your Front Royal FCU accounts, contact us immediately. We’re here to help protect your money.
Stay One Step Ahead
The best defense against fraud is awareness. Share this information with family and friends, especially those who may not be as tech-savvy.
